MijnBureau is the Dutch government’s initiative for a sovereign, open-source digital collaboration suite and workplace environment, developed primarily by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties, or MinBZK).

It serves as the Netherlands’ contribution to the broader European push for digital autonomy, reducing reliance on non-EU providers like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Launched as an open-source project (with code on GitHub under MinBZK/mijn-bureau-infra), MijnBureau emphasizes:

• Full data control and autonomy — Organizations can self-host on their own infrastructure.
• Security and compliance tailored for public sector standards.
• Modular design — Easy to install and scalable, with features like secure messaging, video conferencing (based on La Suite’s Meet with LiveKit integration), file sharing, collaborative editing, and more.

It draws heavily from European collaborations:

• Components and inspirations from France’s La Suite Numérique (e.g., video tools and collaborative elements).
• Germany’s openDesk.
• The project is explicitly built in partnership with Dutch municipalities, provinces, ministries, and aligns with trilateral efforts (France-Germany-Netherlands) under frameworks like 100-day challenges and the Digital Commons EDIC (launched in late 2025 in The Hague).

As of March 2026:

• It’s actively developed (recent commits as late as mid-March 2026, e.g., dependency updates).
• In use or piloted in parts of the public sector, often alongside related efforts like DAWO (Digitally Autonomous Government Workspace) from SSC-ICT.
• Demonstrated at events (e.g., FOSDEM 2026, EDIC launch in December 2025) as a “hybrid” suite amalgamating French and German tools.
• Not yet a full nationwide rollout like France’s La Suite (which serves hundreds of thousands), but a growing, practical alternative with pilots, community involvement, and backing from bodies like SURF.

This fits the Dutch strategy of pragmatic sovereignty: co-developing with EU partners rather than building everything from scratch, while prioritizing open source and self-hosting.
